During our first meetings, we introduced ourselves by sharing our life sketch, an introduction of what we wanted to know about each other. Today we will talk about what Jesus wants us to know about him. Each of these statements from the Bible tells us an important truth about what Jesus said about himself.
Jesus used very specific words so that we can understand who he is and relate to him in a way that has meaning.
Jesus said,
I AM the bread of life. John 6:48
I AM the light of the world. John 8:12
I AM the gate for the sheep. John 10:9
I AM the good shepherd. John 10:11
I AM the way, the truth, and the life. John 14:6
I AM the true vine. John 15:1
I AM the resurrection and the life. John 11:25
Discussion
We will take each of these “I AM” expressions one by one and talk about each one separately, but first let us talk about the overall significance of these sayings.
- Describing yourself, how would you complete the sentence? “I am __________.”
- Thinking of your greatest quality, complete the sentence “I am __________.”
- Have you heard of Jesus before?
If so, how is what you have heard about Jesus different from what Jesus said about himself?
If not, in the following lessons #12 – 17 we will talk about each one of the “I AM’s” individually. - Which “I AM” do you think of when you read John 20:30-31?
Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name. John 20:30-31
Lesson #12, “I am the bread of life” is discussed in greater detail.
